Feedback

from Joanne Sims, Sheffield partnership NHS on booking a course of workshops for NHS staff on managing stress and anxiety in the workplace:

WE invited Hayley and Louise, as part of our wellbeing workshops, to perform a series of real workplace scenarios as a tool to generate discussion and provoke reflection. These scenarios provided a powerful way to explore realistic issues that we all encounter at different times in our working lives.

Each scenario was coproduced with colleagues, making them really relevant as they were based on real workplace experiences. For example, anxiety and stress, which are too often seen as a normal part of a job.

Facilitated discussions after each scenario aimed to identify how we can look after ourselves, speak up and cope more effectively with pressure.

Five monologues were presented portraying a range of scenarios as below. The quotes that have stayed with me are:

  • Burnout – “Just a support worker.”
  • Suicide – “The whispers, the rumours, the questions and the guilt.”
  • Aggressive incident – “Maybe it was something I said.”
  • Racism – “It’s the way Mrs. Riley clutches her bag when I walk in the room.”
  • Conflict – “Am I the problem?

The group fed back that they didn’t know what to expect when they walked in the door. Would it be a play with a stage and costumes? Would they be asked to join in? Would they feel embarrassed? However, the group agreed that they became engaged immediately as educational theatre is a novel and inspiring way to learn; away from screens.

Colleagues reported that they were able to gain greater perspective after watching and discussing the difficult situations play out, some which can occur on almost a daily basis. It was beneficial to discuss the scenarios and listen to others’ opinions. Overall, it was fantastic to connect, lovely to see faces and discover how each other was feeling.

Quotes from attendees

“Through drama, this session provided a light-hearted yet powerful way to explore some very serious issues that we all encounter at different times in our working lives.

Each scenario was suggested by staff themselves, making the session highly relevant, relatable and based on real workplace experiences. It was emotional, thought-provoking and, at times, challenging, but was facilitated with great sensitivity, respect and skill by Hayley and Louise.

I would highly recommend releasing yourself or your staff team time to attend. It offers purposeful, meaningful and genuinely beneficial time out, creating space to reflect, connect with colleagues and explore some important issues in a safe and engaging way”

“I think this should be incorporated into SHPU mandatory training. Subjects like suicide cannot be learnt online. Having Haylo act out realistic scenarios led to a series of rich discussions on so many levels.”

“The session was engaging, interactive and thought provoking. It helped me to reflect deeply with others on different scenarios – would highly recommend people to attend.”
